Liverpool risk losing full-back Glen Johnson as Anfield hierarchy fails to offer England international new contract

Defender could follow former England internationals abroad after Liverpool fail to offer him new contract



Could Glen Johnson become the next England full-back to ply his trade abroad? After Ashley Cole, who has joined Roma, and Micah Richards, now at Fiorentina, the Liverpool defender may also be considering a move overseas.

The defender, 30, is out-of-contract at Liverpool next summer and, as things stand, is entitled to speak to foreign clubs once the January window opens. He already speaks Spanish having picked up the language in an admirable effort to talk to the Hispanophones at Liverpool, such as Luis Suarez.

It would appear negligent of Liverpool to risk losing the player on a free but he is yet to be offered a new deal after six years at Anfield. So Johnson may be sold to another English club in January or strike a pre-contract agreement abroad.

The sticking point would appear to be Johnson’s wages which are currently north of £100,000 a week. Liverpool do not want to pay that.

Indeed, and despite claims to the contrary, it is understood that Johnson, who is not demanding a long-term deal and would consider a 12-month contract, is yet to receive any kind of formal offer from Liverpool.
