The 33-year-old has been kept out of action since July after sustaining an ankle injury.

United are currently in the grip of an injury crisis, with Phil Jones, Ander Herrera, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans all on the sidelines.

And according to The Daily Mail, United have arranged for a behind-closed-doors friendly for Carrick to step up his fitness.

Carrick, as the report suggests, has been working with the rehabilitation team and the physios are hoping he will be included in the squad for the game against West Brom next Monday (8pm).

United have struggled without Carrick this term, winning three of their seven Premier League games.

Carrick, who signed a one-year contract last season, is thought to be keen to finish his career at Old Trafford.
