Romelu Lukaku set to prove a point when Everton take on Chelsea
Belgium striker will want to show Jose Mourinho he made a mistake in letting him go
Lukaku in action for the Blues
Hell hath no fury like a striker rejected.
Or at least one told he faced a career warming the bench.
Romelu Lukaku has spoken respectfully about Chelsea since completing his move to Everton this summer but privately the towering forward will be fixed on proving his old club wrong.
Set on showing Jose Mourinho that he has made a terrible mistake in agreeing to let him go by hitting the Stamford Bridge outfit – and their manager – where it hurts.
Publicly he will say nothing of the sort but, on Saturday night, Lukaku’s actions are sure to reveal his true feelings.
Goodison Park will provide the incendiary backdrop to a potentially barnstorming battle as Jose’s boys arrive on Merseyside.
The sub-plot to an already mouth-watering match between one of the championship favourites and a club battling for the Champions League will centre around Lukaku, his old boss and his replacement.
Big Rom, the enigmatic Mourinho and Diego Costa locking horns in a tussle to prove who is right after all.
After all of the to-ing and fro-ing, the seasons out on loan, the courteous remarks and the thinly veiled digs.
“I don’t have any regrets,” Lukaku says.
“I am very happy with the choices I’ve made. Sometimes things like this happen in football.
“Sometimes it’s not meant to be.
“Chelsea are a big club and when I arrived I was 18. I was very ambitious.
“They taught me how to be a professional, a work ethic and a winning mentality.
“It is a great football club.
“I wouldn’t say anything bad about that club but I didn’t want to on the bench for 10 years.”
