Roberto Martinez has praised the overall game of Steven Naismith after the forward bagged his second goal of the season in the draw with Arsenal.
The Scotland international calmly rolled the ball underneath Gunners keeper Wojciech Szczęsny to put the Blues 2-0 ahead following good work from Romelu Lukaku.
It capped a fine individual display from Naismith, one that earned the praise of his manager.
Martinez told evertontv: “It is not just the goalscoring start that he has had, it’s the overall work ethic, the understanding of the game – they were all contributing to his and our performance.
“I thought he was magnificent from the first minute to the last.
“He didn’t deserve to be in a team that left with a draw.”
Everton were left hard done by following late Arsenal goals from Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud, but Martinez believes the performance of Naismith and his team-mates gives cause for optimism.
He added: “As a team we have played two games and we know we should have got six points. That’s where the work is.
“When we get into a position where we can take what our performance deserves we need to. It’s those small margins.
“But I loved the attitude and I loved the performance against a top side. Now it’s just a case of doing it and getting three points at the end of it.”
