Gunners test will be a pivotal moment Football - FA Premier League - Arsenal FC v Everton FCEverton's Gerard Deulofeu celebrates Arsenal were the team which effectively ended Roberto Martinez’s Wigan career. By sealing The Latics relegation from the top flight in May 2013, The Gunners ensured that Wigan’s bright young boss would soon be looking for another Premier League appointment. Everton were the club which benefitted, and while Arsenal signalled an end at Wigan, at Goodison they have come to represent new beginnings. A come from behind draw at Arsenal last December was when the rest of the TV-watching nation were introduced to Roberto’s revolution. They outpassed the perennial pass-masters, making 100 more passes (433 to 317), and dominated possession. It was a performance which forced some seasoned Everton observers to declare “Everton are back”. Another fixture against Arsenal, later in the season, confirmed that return and even Arsene Wenger declared: “Everton were better than us.” Tomorrow’s visit is another pivotal moment for Martinez. Can Everton match last season’s 72 points? Does a poor pre-season and a sloppy opening day herald a season of solidification rather than progress? Or can Everton make another statement of intent? It should be some occasion on Saturday at Goodison. Source: David Prentice
