Swansea City have bolstered their defence by completing the signing of the Argentina international Federico Fernandez from Serie A club Napoli for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance. The 25-year-old, who made four appearances for his country at the FIFA World Cup this summer, passed a medical on Monday before putting pen to paper on a four-year deal at the Liberty Stadium. Following the departure of Chico Flores to Qatari club Lekhwiya SC, Fernandez, who will wear the No 33 shirt, offers Swans manager Garry Monk increased options at centre-back where he will vie for a place with captain Ashley Williams, Jordi Amat and Kyle Bartley. He is expected to go straight into the squad, subject to receiving international clearance, for Saturday's home fixture with Burnley as the Swans look to build on their opening Barclays Premier League victory at Manchester United. Fernandez, who started his career at Estudiantes and has also played on loan at Getafe in Spain, helped Napoli finish third in the Italian top flight last season and lift the Coppa Italia. He also featured in their UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League campaigns – though he missed both legs against the Swans. The 1.90m defender has been capped 26 times by Argentina, whom he helped reach the World Cup final last month. He becomes Swansea’s seventh summer signing following the arrivals of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis, Middlesbrough's Marvin Emnes, Stephen Kingsley from Falkirk and winger Jefferson Montero from Ecuadorian side Morelia.
