One point really should have been three
While newly-promoted Leicester should be credited for hanging in the game and showing plenty of belief, there is no doubt Everton were the better side. They should have won, no question.
Roberto Martinez was later left to reflect on what went wrong, admitting: "We should have won the game. We got in front twice and, if I had a criticism, it's that we should have gone more for a third."
That third goal would have out the Blues out of sight, but it just would not come.
Everton saw more of the ball (57% possession to Leicester's 43%) and had more shots (13 to 11) in what was an entertaining game. Some of the link-up play between Steven Pienaar and Leighton Baines was a joy to see, and the goals from Aiden McGeady and Steven Naismith were outstanding finishes. But if you don't defend properly, you leave yourself exposed - and the Foxes took advantage.
The (long) wait for an opening-day away win goes on
The Blues were just four minutes (plus a bit of added-time) from from recording their first opening-day away win since 2001.
Their record in season-openers on their travels is not good and you have to go back 13 years to find the last win, a 2-1 victory over Charlton Athletic at the Valley. David Weir and Duncan Ferguson were on target that day for Walter Smith's Blues.
Martinez's class of 2014 were so close to putting the record straight at the King Power Stadium, only for Chris Wood to earn a point for the Foxes with an opportunistic strike. It left Everton having to settle for a 2-2 draw - in a match which had so many echoes of last season's opening-day draw at Norwich City. That day it was Ricky van Wolfswinkel (remember him?) who popped up to deny the Blues.
The long wait for an opening-day away win goes on.
Macca's back and firing on all cylinders
James McCarthy was running on empty by the end of last season - and his boss Roberto Martinez knew it.
The Irish midfielder turned in a string of lung-busting displays in 2013-14, barely missing a minute's action. In fact, he had played a whopping 107 games for club and country during the course of two seasons.
So rather than link up with Ireland for some summer friendlies, the former Wigan was - following pleas from Martinez - allowed by the Football Association of Ireland to take a well-earned break. It looks like being a wise call.
If today's evidence was anything to go by, the rest has done McCarthy the power of good. Along with Pienaar, he was Everton's most impressive performer, covering every blade of grass while snapping into tackles and showing neat touches on the ball.
His display was one of today's big plus points.
There's still work to do in defence
So much of last season's superb form for the Blues was built on a rock-solid defence. The third-best in the Premier League, no less. Which makes some of Everton's defending in pre-season, and at the King Power Stadium, all the more hard to understand.
The Blues shipped 10 goals in five warm-up games (including one against Leicester, in Thailand) and let in two out of nowhere today.
The first, by Leonardo Ulloa, came from a corner which should have been cleared and the second, by Wood, came from more slack defending in the build-up, with skipper Phil Jagielka so unfortunate to see his last-ditch tackle fall straight into the path of the Foxes sub.
With Arsenal up next, the Blues really need to tighten up.
We've seen the funniest finish of the season - already
Day one of the new Premier League campaign and Leicester's Jeff Schlupp managed to produce a comedy moment that might not be bettered in the entire 2014-15 campaign.
The Foxes man exposed a gaping gap in the Everton defence in the second half, taking advantage of the fact John Stones had not provided enough cover in the right-back slot. Schlupp was clean through with only Tim Howard to beat. All he had to do was pick his spot. Instead, he took a wild swing at the ball and sent it ballooning so high over the crossbar, it had the fans sitting in row Z of the stand ducking for cover.
Priceless.
