Everton were left disappointed on Sunday as Aston Villa left Walton Hall Park with all three points in a 2-0 result for the visitors.
Carla Ward's side struck twice in the space of seven minutes giving the Blues an uphill battle to get back into the match.
It was a wet and windy afternoon, with both sides battling tough conditions across the 90 minutes.
Nevertheless, Everton started the game well as Kenza Dali produced two superb strikes in the opening 10 minutes which were matched with fine saves by Hannah Hampton in the Villa goal.
Despite the Blues bright start, Villa netted their opener after 17 minutes.
The ball was played in from the corner flag as former Everton midfielder Jill Scott rose to meet it with a bicycle kick for Emily Gielnik to tap in at the far post.
Villa came close to a second four minutes later as Alisha Lehmann broke towards the Everton goal with only the goalkeeper to beat.
The Swiss striker looked to curl the ball into the net but was denied by MacIver who produced an excellent save.
Aston Villa netted their second after 24 minutes.
Lehmann broke along the right flank and played a low ball into the area for Ramona Petzelberger to strike first time to double the visitors lead.
Everton grew into the game in the second half, but were unable to break down Villa's formidable defence to pull a goal back.
A frustrating match for the Blues who will regroup following the international break and prepare for an away FA Cup tie to Charlton.

Roberts - Results will come
Chris Roberts believes that positive results will come for Everton Women in the league, but the squad must work on the finer details of their game.
Aston Villa struck twice in the first half leaving the Blues with an uphill battle to get back into the match in wet and windy weather conditions.
The interim manager reflected on the defeat, insisting that the team must work on their game management if they are to pick up points in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
"Ultimately, we haven’t managed the game well enough today," he told evertontv.
"We needed to have a strong first half in those tough weather conditions.
"I didn’t mind if we played with or against the wind in the first half, we just had to deal with it better.
"It’s not down to a lack of effort. The girls give everything for this team and for this Club.
"We just have to be better in those small details in the game.
"We had chances, hit the woodwork on numerous occasions but that goal just never came so we’re very disappointed."
Evertonians came down to Walton Hall Park in their numbers on Sunday and their support didn’t go unnoticed for those on the pitch and in the dugout.
The Scot praised those who braved the wild weather and promised that their support will be repaid with results on the park in the coming games.
"The fans as always were incredible today,” Roberts added.
"They rally behind us, they’re a massive support for us.
"I can’t thank them enough, it’s now our job to give them something to cheer about.
"We’re working towards that. To score goals, get points on the board, play attacking football.
"The reality is that we need to start winning games and hopefully we can do that with their support behind us."

Lucy Graham insists that Everton must come together in the difficult moments if they are to climb back up the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
Aston Villa’s first half double consigned the Blues to their fourth consecutive defeat in the league.
Speaking after the disappointment, Graham issued a rallying call to her teammates and is confident there is more than enough quality within the ranks to turn their fortunes around.
“It’s difficult to put our finger on what exactly the issue is,” she told evertontv.
“It’s important for us to maintain a positive mindset as we look for the solutions to these problems, rather than focusing on the negatives.
“We need to be harder on ourselves. Grab ourselves by the scruff of the neck and take responsibility.
“It’s easy to pass on blame but we’re the players on the pitch and if you take responsibility then it can help to find the solutions.
“We need to galvanise ourselves and become stronger.
“Trust each other more, give our teammates more responsibility because I think when you gravitate towards these hard moments that you find yourself in and then you start to succeed you then gain confidence.
“The worst thing you can do is shy away and go into a shell.
“Hopefully we start to find wins and things begin to click for us.
“On Sunday, there was clearances off the line, we hit the crossbar.
“Sometimes the luck just doesn’t fall for you.
“This international break is a time for us to reset, reflect and hopefully come back in with a clear mindset.”
With her heart on her sleeve, Graham spoke with true passion when talking about the loyal support the players have received this season.
The midfielder hopes they can repay that faith in the upcoming games with points in the league.
“It’s what the badge means, what it means to play for this Club,” Graham added.
“Our fans are at the heart of it all.
“We cannot thank them enough for continuing to come along to support us every week.
“It would be so easy for them to not turn up when games aren’t going our way.
“They follow us through thick and thin.
“I hope that they can stick by us because hopefully we can turn this around for them.”
