Earlier this week, Everton completed the signing of Bosnia and Herzegovina international Muhamed Besic from Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros. The 21-year-old penned a five-year contract and was handed the number 17 shirt. But what more is there to know about the Blues’ latest midfield acquisition? To get the lowdown on the new boy, we spoke to Attila Leitner, editor of daily Hungarian newspaper Napi Gazdaság… Attila, what can Evertonians expect to see from Muhamed Besic? Put simply, 90 minutes non-stop work. He doesn’t seem to tire and I think he proved at the World Cup that he can go the distance when playing at a higher level. His passing accuracy is outstanding and he is very confident in himself. He also got a number of yellow cards in his time in Hungary - but Hungarian referees don’t let as much go as referees in the Premier League! He seems a fairly tough, no-nonsense type of character. Do you think his style will be suited to the English Premier League? Very much so. I think both his toughness and his playing style make him a good fit. I mentioned his short-pass accuracy before, but his long balls are usually on target as well. He is also very physical and rather difficult to tackle. Was Besic a fans’ favourite at Ferencváros? They produced a flag to wish him good luck at Everton… He was a huge favourite. Ferencváros is the team of the nation and to play in green and white is an honour for anyone, or at least it should be. I honestly never would have thought that a Bosnian-German player would be the one who seemed most aware what it means to play for this team. But he was - and the fans loved him for it. How disappointed, then, were the Ferencváros fans to see him leave? Very. But everybody seems to understand that he has grown out of this league and grown out of this team. If the rumours about his price are correct then he is the highest-priced player Ferencváros has sold in a very long time, if not ever. I think Everton is the perfect team for him. I'm sure that while he's there, he will do everything to make Everton fans as happy as we were while he played for us. If you could compare him any one player – past or present – who would it be? Perhaps former Inter and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Matthias Sammer. He was an excellent defensive midfielder, but if necessary he could participate in attacks and also be used as a sweeper. Sammer became European Player of the Year in 1996, and hopefully Besic will get there too.
