Won 3-2Everton Ladies showed great character to come from behind after conceding an early goal to beat Reading Women 3-2 at Southport’s Merseyrail Community Stadium on Sunday.
Goals from Inessa Kaagman, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah and Simone Magill saw the Blues Girls claim victory in their last home game of the season after Reading’s Remi Allen handed the hosts a lead inside 10 minutes. Everton then struck back with three goals before Fara Williams scored a late consolation goal.
The win sees Everton move to within a point of ninth-place Brighton & Hove Albion with one game remaining in the 2018-19 WSL season.
Everton manager Willie Kirk made one change from the team that impressed and narrowly lost out 2-1 to WSL champions Arsenal last weekend, with right-back Emma Brownlie coming in for the injured Taylor Hinds.
Reading got off to a quick start when Allen opened the scoring in the eighth minute after Natasha Harding squared for her teammate to tap home from close range to put Kelly Chambers’ side ahead.
The Blue Girls looked to strike back straight away but Boye-Hlorkah’s volley from inside the box flew straight into the hands of Reading shot stopper Grace Moloney.
Rachel Furness looked to make it two for the visitors in the 19th minute but Dan Turner’s last-ditch block prevented a goal, and the Blue Girls captain then found herself at the other end of the pitch moments later with her driving run and left-footed shot producing a smart diving save from Moloney.
Everton’s first clear-cut chance of the match came from a corner in the 38th minute. Angharad James’ curling set piece was parried by the busy Moloney but only far enough to Boye-Hlorkah whose looping header was cleared off the line by Reading captain Kirsty Pearce.
Two minutes later, the hosts grabbed a much-deserved equaliser thanks to a majestic chip from Kaagman. Moloney’s poor clearance landed at the Dutch international’s feet and the midfielder made no mistake, lobbing the keeper from 20 yards out to bring Kirk’s side level just before the break.
Five minutes after the interval Everton took the lead for the first time in the match, the impressive Boye-Hlorkah claiming her second goal in as many weeks.
The winger picked the ball up 40 yards from goal on the left flank before cutting inside, beating two Reading players and firing into the bottom-right corner of Moloney’s goal.
Kirk’s side looked to turn the screw and grabbed a third 10 minutes later. Moloney’s parried save landed at the feet of Everton attacker Magill, who made no mistake in passing the ball into an empty net.
Reading got back into the match and gave the Blues Girls a nervy finish to the game with 15 minutes on the clock when Williams dinked the ball over Levell from a tight angle.
Kirk’s team showed the sort of character that helped them come back from Allen’s early strike with a determined performance in the remaining minutes of the match with their backs up against the wall to hold on for all three points.
Everton’s last match of the season sees them take on city rivals Liverpool Women on Saturday 11 May at Prenton Park (12.30pm)
