Tim Howard helped the United States step up their World Cup preparations by keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 friendly win over Azerbaijan on Tuesday evening. The Blues keeper, wearing the captain’s armband on his 98th international appearance, completed the full game as late goals from Mix Diskerud and Aron Johannsson secured victory for Jurgen Klinsmann’s side in San Francisco. It was a landmark match for Howard, who equalled Kasey Keller’s record of 53 victories for the US Men’s National Team and posted his 35th senior international shut-out. The United States face Turkey in another friendly on Sunday before travelling to the World Cup where they will compete in Group G alongside Germany, Portugal and Ghana.
