Everton’s most successful ever chairman Sir Philip Carter has been honoured for his unwavering loyalty to the football club with the Howard Kendall award. Each year, the prize is given out to recognise an individual or group that has been adjudged to have realised outstanding achievement at the Club. And at the ninth Annual Awards Evening on Wednesday, Everton’s Life President was singled out for the service he has offered to the Blues since first becoming a director at Goodison Park in 1976. Sir Philip collected his prize from Leighton Baines and Romelu Lukaku, along with Bill Kenwright who asked those in attendance to ‘salute’ the 86-year-old when he was invited on stage. Sir Philip began his first of two spells as chairman in 1978 – a role he occupied for 13 years. Much of that period was spent working in tandem with Kendall, who he famously stood by as manager when the 1983/84 season began to go off track. History now shows the significance of that decision – the trophy laden period that followed under Kendall’s stewardship included FA Cup glory later that season, the European Cup Winners’ Cup crown the following year, as well as Division One championship titles in 1985 and 1987. Following Peter Johnson's tenure in the mid-90s, Sir Philip returned as chairman to steady the ship and he stayed there until handing the job over to Mr Kenwright in 2004. The former chief executive of Littlewoods and President of the Football League re-joined the board of directors in 2008 where he has remained ever since.
