Manager Ronald Koeman has confirmed midfielder Tom Davies will not be part of the England Under-19s squad for the Euro finals this summer – because he wants the 18-year-old to take a well-earned rest. Davies played a key role in leading England’s young lions to the finals in Georgia, captaining the team to a 3-0 victory over Spain last month which sealed their qualification. After finishing top of their group with a 100-per-cent record, Keith Downing’s Under-19s will now head to the finals in July as one of the favourites to win the tournament. However, Davies won’t be on the plane to Georgia after the Football Association agreed to Everton’s request not to use the 18-year-old this summer so he can use the break to recharge his batteries. Koeman said: “Steve Walsh spoke to the people at the FA about this and the plan is he will get the summer off. “I don’t know exactly what the programme is for the rest of the youth national teams but Tom will not be involved in that tournament.” Davies has been a virtual ever-present in the Blues’ midfield since he made his mark as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 win at Leicester on Boxing Day. The teenager from West Derby has started all but one of the 13 games since the turn of the year and was recently rewarded with a new five-year contract following a string of eye-catching performances in the Blues’ engine room. Martinez stopped Barkley from doing similar with the England u21's. I think at that age, they should just let them go and enjoy themselves. To suggest he needs a rest at 18 years of age is bizarre.

It should be up to the player. I have to think that isn't going to happen. What I would say though, is that managers can't refuse players at senior international level, so why can they at u23?
