 “I hope today’s players recognise just what a great club Everton is to play for,” declared former Blues winger Ronny Goodlass as he accepted his Everton Proud award at last week’s Gwladys Street’s Hall of Fame dinner but thoughts are already turning to the 2018 event. After an eight-year hiatus, the gala event, previously held at the Adelphi between 1998-2009, returned at a new home, the Hilton Hotel. Despite the goalscoring exploits that have seen him crowned Everton’s leading marksman of the Premier League era, it remains to be seen whether Romelu Lukaku is eventually inducted into the exclusive club but fans must now choose between 15 prospective blood bloods for entry in 12 months time. An online poll is expected in due course but on the night of the event, attendees were all given a shortlist of candidates from which they could choose five nominations. Eight of the list are players who have turned out for the Blues in the 21st century: Mikel Arteta; Tim Cahill; Tony Hibbert; Tim Howard; Leon Osman; Alan Stubbs; David Weir and Joseph Yobo. There are two of the side that helped Everton win their last major trophy to date, the 1-0 win over Manchester United in the 1995 FA Cup final, goalscorer Paul Rideout and Joe Parkinson who was one of Joe Royle’s ‘Dogs of War’ in midfield. There are a couple of shooting stars who briefly lit up Goodison before quickly burning out in the shape of Andrei Kanchelskis, who lasted just one-and-a-half seasons between 1995-97 and Gary Lineker who bagged 40 goals in a single campaign in 1986/87.
