Norwich City v Everton - Premier League CupHarry Charsley says Everton Under-23s are delighted to be fighting on a number of fronts as they prepare to take on Norwich City in the Premier League Cup this evening. David Unsworth’s side currently sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League 2 table with six games remaining, while a win against the Canaries tonight will ensure their passage to the last 16 knockout stage of the Premier League Cup with a game to spare. The Premier League Cup group standings (top two qualify for last 16) And Charsley, who is the side’s top scorer with eight strikes so far this term, insists he and the rest of the squad are more than happy to temporarily turn their attentions away from the league for tonight's clash at Carrow Road (7pm kick-off). “It’s not difficult for us to focus on another competition,” he told evertonfc.com. “We just love playing games and winning games. Confidence is high at the moment so we welcome it, it’s another opportunity to go out there and show what we can do. “It’s a big incentive to know that a win would be enough go through. It was a tough game when we played them earlier in the season and we’re expecting the same again, but hopefully we can win it. “It’s a case of keeping the momentum going now after an important [1-0] win against Arsenal last time out. “We’re pleased with how it is going but the season isn’t over yet and we need to continue to work hard. Obviously, we want to win every competition we’re in but we will take it one game at a time.” Everton FC

Everton Under-23s suffered a 1-0 defeat to Norwich City at Carrow Road, leaving it all to play for in their Premier League Cup group with one round of fixtures to play. The young Blues temporarily switched their attentions from the Premier League 2 - where they currently sit six points clear at the top of the table - and started brightly against the Canaries. Kieran Dowell spurned an early chance after neat play involving Beni Baningime and Anton Donkor, before substitute David Henen forced veteran goalkeeper Paul Jones into an excellent save with a fierce left-footed drive. Half-chances fell to Harry Charsley and Liam Walsh in the second period, but the Toffees were dealt a hammer blow when, with eight minutes remaining, Ebou Adams slotted home into an empty net after a fumble in the penalty area. The result means Portsmouth top Group D on eight points, with Everton and Norwich both on seven points and Wolves on five points. The Under-23s’ final group game is a trip to Pompey on Monday 27 February.

Unsworth takes the positivesDavid Unsworth focused on the positives after watching his Under-23s fall to a 1-0 defeat against Norwich City in the Premier League Cup.Canaries midfielder Ebou Adams seized on an error eight minutes from the end to consign the young Blues to a narrow defeat at Carrow Road. But the game saw the return of fit-again Joe Williams, who came off the bench midway through the second half to make his first appearance since overcoming a serious ankle injury more than four months ago. Unsworth also hailed the performance of defender Antonee Robinson, who excelled in an unfamiliar role of centre-back in East Anglia. “It was great to see Joe Williams back out there after all the work he’s put in,” Unsworth told evertonfc.com. “I also thought Antonee Robinson, playing in a new position at this level, was outstanding. “Jonjoe Kenny and Matthew Pennington have gone out to Dubai with the first team, which is fantastic. Then, after losing Gethin Jones and Callum Connolly out on loan, we were a bit short in that department. “Antonee has played centrally once or twice when he was younger and we knew with his pace and spring that he’d be well-suited to going up against their striker. He was and he was excellent - their striker got substituted and that tells you everything. “He showed his versatility. It’s great when young players do that, like Harry Charsley also did as well at right-back.” The result leaves Group D wide open with one round of fixtures to play, with Portsmouth top on eight points, Everton and Norwich both on seven points and Wolves on five points. With the top two teams set to progress to the knockout stages, a win against Pompey later this month would guarantee the Toffees’ place in the last 16 - and Unsworth says his players are up for the challenge. He added: “I thought we played very well in the first half, we just didn’t get the goals to show for it. We carved them open on several occasions but we weren’t clinical enough. “I thought it was an even game in the second half, then we’ve let in a terrible goal - a bad mistake - and that was it. You can’t make mistakes like that and expect to win games. “We know what we need to do now. If we win, we qualify - it is as simple as that. It’s black and white for us and we’ll be ready.” Everton FC
