Lack of sleep is costing the UK economy £40bn and increasing the risk of death for large numbers of tired Britons, according to a new report.
Think tank Rand Europe evaluated the economic cost of poor sleep in five countries - the UK, US, Canada, Germany and Japan - using data from 62,000 people. They claim the loss equates to about 1.86pc of economic growth and say that sleeping for just one extra hour a night could add £24bn to the UK economy. The £40bn equates to almost 2pc of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The study, entitled Why Sleep Matters - The Economic Costs Of Insufficient Sleep, also found that sleep deprived workers are likely to face a higher risk of early death - with those only managing six hours a night or less 13pc more likely to die sooner than those sleeping between seven and nine hours. It also found that in the US, tired workers cost the economy $411bn, while in Japan the effects cost $138bn.
