Cheers guys - small things seen large are often more remarkable than we think. A tree in my back garden is rife with insects. The leaves full of aphids (probably black fly) and legions of ants and Multi Coloured Lady Beetle larvae.  I read the adult actually bites, but can't say I've ever been bitten by one.

Looks like it may be the larva of a harlequin LB. They are an invasive species that came to our shores I think form America, and do to a degree threaten he UK's natural population of ladybirds...
