Everton 4-0 Aston VillaRoss Barkley 17 Romelu Lukaku 28 Ross Barkley 42 Romelu Lukaku 59 In such troubled times, Aston Villa’s only solace comes from the past. The sight of Tony Morley nonchalantly rolling in a penalty in the half-time entertainment was a reminder that Villa are former European Cup winners. Now the poorest start in their history has got worse. If Rémi Garde was under any illusions about the scale of the challenge he has taken on, he should not be now. Everton inflicted a first defeat on the Frenchman, overwhelming Villa by half-time to leave them with a return of two points from their last 12 games. While Villa acquitted themselves commendably to secure a draw against Manchester City in Garde’s debut, they capitulated embarrassingly at Goodison Park. Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku scored twice apiece as Everton took their tally to 10 goals in two home games. Like Sunderland’s Sam Allardyce, another recent appointment who saw his charges eviscerated at Goodison Park, Everton illustrated the problems Garde has inherited. Villa were anaemic in attack, where the loneliest of lone strikers, Jordan Ayew, was distanced from his team-mates, insipid in midfield, where their lack of fight was summed up by the statistic showing that no one was booked, and dismal in defence. Indeed, Garde’s difficulties have mushroomed. Within half an hour, the absence of Villa left-back Jordan Amavi, who has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury, seemed to assume huge proportions. Every Everton opening, two of which produced goals, stemmed from their right flank. Amavi’s deputy, Kieran Richardson, cut a hapless, helpless figure as he was subjected to trial by the tricky Gerard Deulofeu. It was a test he failed. It was all the more significant as Villa’s gameplan seemed to entail keeping a clean sheet. That encouraged Everton to commit more men forward and brought the breakthrough. James McCarthy burst towards the penalty box to feed Deulofeu. While Brad Guzan succeeded in parrying the Spaniard’s shot, it was only as far as Barkley, who swept in the rebound. It was another indication of Deulofeu’s catalytic prowess as he surged past Richardson to reach the byline and picked out Arouna Koné with his cut-back. The Ivorian seemed poised to celebrate when Guzan clawed his shot away. Nevertheless, the same formula produced a second goal. This time Seamus Coleman delivered the right-wing cross and Lukaku met it with a towering header. His 50th Premier League goal was perfectly placed and he joined a select band, with Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have reached that landmark before their 23rd birthday. Barkley’s second goal was as simple as his first, but both illustrated how he is getting into scoring positions more frequently this season. When Guzan was unable to cling on to the ball as he came out to challenge Koné, it broke free for Barkley. It amounted to an open goal and an invitation the England international was in no mood to decline. If Villa were marginally brighter after the break, Everton’s fourth goal was as damning as any that preceded it. Roberto Martínez’s men simply passed their way through the middle of the visitors’ defence, the terrific trio of Deulofeu, Barkley and Lukaku combining as the Belgian scored his second. It allowed Martínez to replace Deulofeu and Barkley, who were both afforded standing ovations. Brendan Galloway almost added his first Everton goal and the substitute Kevin Mirallas, who was denied by Guzan, came close to scoring his side’s fifth. Even without a further addition to the scoreline, Villa’s sixth successive away defeat ranked as their heaviest defeat to Everton since 1982. They are making history, but the wrong sort. Guardian

All positives today and nothing really to moan about. Have we really turned the corner ready for a good run into Christmas?

Happy days and on top of it all a clean sheet. Lukaku was great today and Barkley must have thought it was his birthday with those 2 goals. Deulofeu providing assists again is a good sign. Our defenders gave nothing away and we dominated throughout which I expected. COYB!

Especially now David Moyes is looking for a job. Credit where it's due. Martinez got it spot on today even if they were very poor. You can only play what is infront of you and our boys did a very professional job of putting Villa to the sword early on. It is good for Lukaku to score 2 more good goals as when he plays well so do Everton.
