Asian Cup 2015: Japan and Iraq progress to quarter-finals with wins • Japan 2-0 Jordan; Iraq 2-0 Palestine • Japan to play UAE and Iraq to face Iran • Asian Cup daily: Gucci bags crucial goal for on-trend Iran Keisuke Honda of Japan celebrates after he scored against Jordan in their Asian Cup group match. Photograph: Robert Cianflone/Getty Images Keisuke Honda scored in a third straight Asian Cup game as Japan fought off a determined Jordan to advance to the quarter-finals as group winners on Tuesday. Iraq followed Japan from Group D after Younis Mahmoud and Ahmed Yasin gave them a 2-0 victory over the already-eliminated Palestine. Japan will face the United Arab Emirates in Sydney on Friday, while Iraq play Iran in Canberra. The Japanese constantly stretched the Jordan defence, and inevitably broke through in the 24th minute when Honda coolly slotted home a rebound at the near post after a powerful shot by Shinji Okazaki was parried by Amer Shafi. Jordan opened the second half vastly more organised and managed to put the Japanese on the back foot but they were unable to make the most of their chances as fatigue set in. Shinji Kagawa then put the win beyond doubt eight minutes from time when he met a long pass from Yoshinori Muto in front of goal and fired in. After Iraq and Palestine had played out a goalless first half, Mahmoud broke the deadlock when he headed in an Ali Adnan Kadhim cross three minutes into the second. Yasin sealed the win in the final moments when he gathered a Yaser Kasim pass and found the net at the near post. Guardian

Keisuke Honda you mean? We were linked with him then it all went quiet. Barry needs a replacement so we have 4 nifty midfielders when Jimmy comes back but will we spend on midfield when our defenders are so shit?
