Kevin Sheedy  Everton Under-18s crashed to a rare heavy home defeat as Derby made them pay for a host of missed chances. The young Blues lost 5-1 at Finch Farm on Saturday after falling behind within three minutes as Offrande Zanzala got in behind defender Arlen Birch to set up Tom Mellor. Everton, who are in the grip of an injury crisis with five key players side-lined, reacted well to the set-back, as Nathan Holland and Birch provided a constant threat down the right-hand side. They were almost rewarded when right-back Birch found Calum Dyson in the box, and the striker rose well but only to divert his header onto the woodwork. Everton controlled the first half and their efforts were rewarded just before the break when the ball broke to Dyson in the box and he supplied a cool finish to equalise. But the hosts started the second half the same way that they did the first – conceding a goal within the opening minutes to put them instantly on the back foot again. Derby worked the ball out to the right-hand side with Mohammed Adams finding Kellan Gordon unmarked on the edge of the box and he fired past Mateusz Hewelt. Everton tried to rally again, but Callum Connolly failed to hit the target. Then Derby struck a decisive blow, edging further ahead via the penalty spot. Charles Vernam was fouled, dusted himself down and fired past Hewelt. The Blues continued to press but Zanzala and Alex Babos both scored for Derby. The Blues visit Blackburn Rovers this Saturday. |
