Ashley Young insists everyone in the Everton squad is well aware of what is required between now and the end of the season as they look to end their record-breaking winless run.
Young won the penalty converted by Dominic Calvert-Lewin against Newcastle United to earn Sean Dyche’s side a share of the spoils at St James’ Park on Saturday but although the 1-1 draw proved a welcome point, it also ensured the Blues are now on their longest-ever run without tasting victory in the Premier League. Everton have now played 13 matches in the competition since they triumphed 2-0 against Burnley on Dyche’s Turf Moor return on December 16 and will be looking to end the sequence when the Clarets come to Goodison Park on Saturday. As the elder statesman in the side, 38-year-old Young acknowledged that his team-mates have turned to him for guidance but he maintains everyone understands the task ahead as Everton look to keep themselves out of relegation danger. He said: “The result at the weekend away to Bournemouth was one of those games where we got ourselves back into it and lost the game. We’ve got massive characters, we’ve got seniors, we’ve got youngsters, everyone’s got a job to do out on the pitch and everyone is a leader when we go out on the pitch. “The seniors will talk more but when you step across those white lines, there’s 11 leaders on the pitch. Everyone knows what we’ve got to do, we’ve spoken about it, we’ve spoken before this game what we need to do from now until the end of the season. “Everyone’s got it in their heads and everyone is pulling together and pulling to try and achieve some points on the board.”
Everton were handed an immediate 10-point deduction – the largest sporting sanction in 135 years of English top flight football at the time in November – for a single PSR breach, which was later reduced to six points on appeal. Subsequently, Nottingham Forest have received a smaller punishment (four points) after a larger breach – which they too have appealed – while the Blues are now awaiting the verdict on their second independent commission hearing of this season. Dyche has acknowledged that the off-the-field uncertainties have had an impact on the players and Young admits that while the squad remain focused on their job on the pitch, it is inevitable that some of the ‘noise’ as his manager calls it, will filter through. He said: “At times obviously it does but when we got the deduction the job in hand was just to win games. It was all we could do.
“Around the Christmas period it was just waiting to find out what was what. I think at times it did start to affect us.
“But we’ve been saying the last few games that we’ve got eight finals left to get points on the board. It’s was a massive point (at Newcastle United) and we dust ourselves down to go again at the weekend.”

Everton have been deducted two points for another breach of the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Before the points deduction was announced, Everton sat 15th in the Premier League table, four points above the bottom three. They now drop below Brentford into 16th place on 27 points, two points and two places above 18th-placed Luton.
Everton were also deducted 10 points in November for exceeding permitted losses by £19.5m over a period ending with the 2021/22 season. However, this was reduced to six points following a successful appeal.
Everton were charged again in January, along with Nottingham Forest, for breaching PSR rules over a period ending with the 2022/23 season. Forest were handed a four-point deduction and have appealed against the decision.

In January 2024, Everton were charged by the Premier League for breaching the permitted Profit and Sustainability thresholds for the assessment period ending 2022/23.
The matter was referred to a Premier League Commission, which has today announced Everton will receive an immediate two-point deduction. While the Club’s position has been that no further sanction was appropriate, the Club is pleased to see that the Commission has given credit to the majority of the issues raised by the Club, including the concept of double punishment, the significant mitigating circumstances facing the Club due to the war in Ukraine, and the high level of co-operation and early admission of the Club’s breach.
Everton remains committed to working collaboratively with the League on all matters relating to PSR but is extremely concerned by the inconsistency of different commissions in respect of points deductions applied.
The Club would like to place on record its thanks to the Fan Advisory Board and other fan groups for their submissions during this process, and to all Evertonians for their ongoing patience and unstinting support.
The Club and its legal representatives have begun the preparations to appeal the Commission’s decision.
No further comment will be made at this time.
