Frank Lampard insists his team must match intensity and passion of Evertonians when the Blues contest Saturday’s 241st Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, as he declared it is time “get to work and get results” following the closure of the transfer window.
The deadline-day arrivals of midfield duo Idrissa Gana Gueye and James Garner completed Everton’s summer business and Lampard praised the Club’s joined-up, strategic approach to strengthening the squad.
The Blues brought in eight new players during the window, with Lampard outlining how recruiting players with “energy and personality” was a key focus.
The Everton manager is now savouring Saturday’s lunchtime derby showdown and, speaking at his pre-match press conference, explained why it is a game like no other.
“I understand what this game means,” he said.
“I was fortunate enough to take part in a lot of London derbies, but when you’re talking about a city like Liverpool and what it means to both clubs… The city is so 50/50 and it ramps up the intensity of the game and what it means to the fans.
“It’s my first Merseyside derby at Goodison and I’m excited about that fact.
“We’ll have a home crowd behind us before the game and during the game. We have to perform with the same passion they’re going to turn up with.”
On how Everton can overcome the challenge Liverpool will pose, Lampard added: “We’ve got to show work-ethic, togetherness, organisation and spirit.
“We showed that at Leeds and I thought we were very unfortunate not to win the game.
“There are similarities with Leeds and Liverpool, in terms of how they set up and their intensity.
“We have to match that as a baseline. We know they’re a class act on the pitch, and they’ve had a lot of time to work on their identity and style.
“We have been very close to winning games this season and we should have more points. “The feeling is we’re getting better and better. We have to continue with that.
“We understand our strengths and where we can make things difficult for them.”
Lampard explained the specific attributes new-boys Gana and Garner will bring to Everton.
The Blues boss also highlighted the importance of unity at all levels in the Club when identifying and acquiring transfer targets.
He said: “We were very strategic in the way we approached the window, in terms of being a club that’s joined up from the owner, to the Chairman, to the Board, to myself, to [Director of Football] Kevin Thelwell.
“Hopefully that reflects in what we did. When I look at the squad, I’m happy. Now it’s time to get our heads down and work.
“Gana is a player for the now. The Club knows him very well and he knows the Club. In terms of his qualities as a number six or as a number eight – a role he played at PSG a lot – it gives me a great option, great experience, and a different profile of player to what we had.
“With James Garner, he’s a young player with a lot of energy and a lot of quality.
“I think it’s a good example of us trying to move forward in a sensible direction, improving the core of the team in midfield and getting energy in there, as well as quality. Now we’ve got good competition there as well and that’s important over the course of a long season.”
Lampard added: “The window is shut and the squad is together, now it really begins in terms of what we can improve in our style of play.
“There were two things I really wanted to improve – the energy of the team, particularly in central midfield, and [adding] personality.
“When you look at the players we’ve brought in… Some are very experienced and have a real vocal presence and professionalism, which affects the group. That’s why I’m happy with how we’ve recruited.
“Results now are the key, and we get to work now.”

A lot of people I have talked to are feeling optimistic about this one. I suppose it is a free hit for us, as no one will give us a chance. I for one feels that we will come up short yet again, but it will be closer than most neutrals think.

Good afternoon.
We’re excited to be back at Goodison Park to round off a busy week that began with two away games in the space of four days — and for a match that needs no introduction.
The Merseyside derby is one of the biggest games in football. Nobody in our group needs reminding of what this historic fixture means to you, the people of this city and supporters around the world.
We head into it on the back of consecutive 1-1 draws on the road — against Brentford and Leeds United — a pair of performances full of character and discipline that, on reflection, could and possibly should have returned more in the way of points.
With that said, they were games that could have easily got away from us last season and I was extremely proud of the battling spirit the team showed to grind out results away from home.
We know we’re in a process of rebuilding and I must underline we will get better. We want to be on the ball more, we want to be braver and play through the lines more but that takes time and, in the meantime, we must show the foundations we’ve set in every single game.
Those foundations are passion, desire, fighting for the badge, an appreciation of what it means to be an Everton player and relishing that privileged position.
The appreciation of the travelling supporters at the Gtech Community Stadium and Elland Road at the end of both games was nothing short of incredible.
I keep saying it but it’s important to reiterate just how much of an impact your unwavering support continues to have on what happens on the pitch. Having experienced it on the pitch and in the dugout, it’s impossible not to be affected by the support Evertonians show for their team. It gives you that extra burst of energy when you’re tired, the bravery when momentum swings against you and the desire to go in harder to that tackle.
I’m delighted with how the summer signings have quickly picked up on that and harnessed it, too, adding to a group that is desperate to help our football club succeed.
Our last match against Leeds United saw us switch formation to a 4-3-3 for a couple of reasons. Firstly, Mason Holgate becoming the third centre-back to pick up a significant injury this season, but, as well as that, I was keen to get an extra body in midfield. I was very pleased with the way we used that advantage on and off the ball on the night.
I have to give huge credit to the players for executing what we wanted from them in the very short window we had following the Brentford match.
At the end of last season, we played five at the back and it helped us to stay in the Premier League. Now we want to move forward, so we’ll keep looking at it and having the versatility within the group is a good thing for us.
We welcome Jurgen Klopp and the staff and players of Liverpool.
We’re under no illusions at the size of the task we face against a team who have been consistently competing for domestic and continental honours in recent seasons.
Their style is established and clear. They are relentless in and out of possession and, for starters, we have to be ready to match their energy all over the pitch.
It’s a challenge that excites us and one we’ll absolutely meet head on.
At the time of writing, we've just secured our seventh summer signing, Idrissa Gana Gueye. We’re delighted to add Gana, someone who knows the Club inside-out, to our group.
He adds invaluable experience to a relatively young squad and will be a massive help to the likes of Amadou Onana, who is a young leader in his own right, in maximising his huge potential.
I am very pleased with the business we have managed to do over the summer. It has been a collective, joined-up effort between myself, Kevin Thelwell, the owner, Chairman and Board and I am grateful for all of their support.
Now, thankfully, the window has closed. No more distractions. We can concentrate on what matters — the football and picking up points, starting with a big occasion today.
Enjoy the game,
Frank
