According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton have appointed Jerome Thomas to a key London role as part of a continued restructuring of their scouting department.
Thomas had been working behind the scenes with the Goodison Park natives since January, but has now been hired as their Academy Area Coordinator in the capital after the Toffees parted with Chris Scudder earlier in the year.
The 38-year-old will report directly to Everton’s Head of Academy recruitment Chris Perkins, with the remit of discovering and tracking potential talents playing in Under 13 to U18 sides in London. Thomas has previously worked as a part-time scout for Chelsea since retiring from the game in 2017, bringing the curtain down on a career that began in Arsenal’s academy and returned more than 150 Premier League appearances between spells with four clubs.
Scudder stepped down from his position with Everton after accepting an offer to become West Ham United’s new Emerging Talent Manager.
The Merseyside outfit have been restructuring their scouting department heavily over the past year with Perkins appointed in April 2020 to replace Martin Waldron (Liverpool Echo), who left the club after being suspended for an illegal approach for a schoolboy player.
Thomas will have a strong knowledge of the London football scene from his time working at Chelsea and years playing in the capital, having spent four-and-a-half seasons with Charlton Athletic before joining Crystal Palace later in his career.
He also helped West Bromwich Albion to secure promotion into the Premier League during the 2009/10 campaign, and later returned to the Championship with Leeds United where Neil Warnock lauded him as a ‘direct and positive’ player (BBC).
