A revamped Elland Road or Leeds United stadium move may coincide with a naming rights deal from a sponsor like ‘Amazon’.
That is according to finance guru and new Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking with the future of the historic stadium a hot topic of discussion following Andrea Radrizzani’s recent comments. Football Insider revealed on Monday that Tottenham are seeking a record-breaking £25m-a-year agreement for the sponsorship of their stadium.
Maguire claims that it is not out of the question that Leeds might pursue a similar deal but that it is unlikely to happen with the stadium in its current form.
“I think they might go down a naming rights deal with the stadium expansion. That would be an appropriate point to do it,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams. “I think Leeds potentially you would put among the other four or other five outside the Big Six. They’ve got the opportunity to establish themselves as a top 10 club in the Premier League.
“There are lots of positives. They’re working with San Francisco 49ers. Paraag Marathe [new Leeds vice-chairman] is very commercially driven. So you can see that happening.
“To Leeds fans, however, it will always be Elland Road. I don’t necessarily think the sponsors would be too bothered about that if it’s being referred to as the Amazon Bowl or whatever it’s going to be on a more global basis.
“If Leeds start to be successful and people become more interested in the club then I think the naming rights could piggyback on the back of that.
“But I think you’d have to have a significant event, such as a redevelopment or something of that nature to get the most value from it.”
