Former Everton midfielder Royston Drenthe has completed a surprise transfer back to Spain with minnows Racing Murcia, just a month after being declared bankrupt by a Dutch court.
The 33-year-old joins the fourth tier side from amateur Dutch club Kozakken Boys, having previously reversed his 2016 decision to retire from football when joining Sparta Rotterdam in 2018.
Murcia had intended to unveil Drenthe on Thursday but were forced to cancel their planned press conference due to Covid-19 protocol.
The one-time Netherlands international started his career with Feyenoord before signing for Real Madrid in 2007. He spent the 2011/12 season on loan at Everton only for his time at Goodison to end unceremoniously after falling out with manager David Moyes.
Drenthe launched a career in rap music after announcing he had quit football in 2016, under the moniker Roya2Faces, while he also attempted to break into acting, appearing in TV crime drama Mocro Maffia.
