I don't think he's anything special.

Everton are to open discussions on a new contract with Michael Keane after Barcelona were linked with the defender this week. The England centre back was somewhat surprisingly linked with Barcelona this week after the Catalan club appointed Ronald Koeman, who brought the 27-year-old to Goodison Park when in charge of Everton. There has been no contact, though, from the Catalan club. Keane has endured difficult periods at the club since arriving in the summer of 2017 for an initial fee of £25 million from Burnley and has also lost his place in the England squad. He has a deal at Everton that expires in 2022 and retains Everton’s backing. Keane finished the season in Carlo Ancelotti’s line-up, although injuries to Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate had reduced the Italian’s options. Everton had previously targeted the signing of a centre back, having identified Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes before the pandemic, only to back away from a deal. The emergence of the youngster Jarrad Branthwaite, 18, who was signed from Carlisle United last January, plus the presence of Keane, Mina and Holgate means they are reassessing their options. Midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin, who has played only 135 minutes since being signed from Mainz last summer because of injury, could also play in a central defensive role. Chelsea could seal the £50 million transfer of Ben Chilwell from Leicester City by the beginning of next week. The England left back was in London yesterday to have medical checks on a heel injury. Lewis Dunk, meanwhile, has signed a new contract at Brighton & Hove Albion, which will keep him at the club for the next five years. The 28-year-old England centre back has been linked with a move away from the Amex Stadium this summer but the club confirmed yesterday that he had agreed new terms on the south coast. Dunk, who is the Brighton captain and their player of the year having helped the club to finish in 15th place, was a reported target for Chelsea and Leicester City in recent weeks. He came through the ranks at Brighton and has played close to 300 times for the club across three different divisions. “I’m delighted to have signed a new contract,” he said. “The aim now is to build on a record Premier League season.” Henrik Larsson, the former Sweden and Celtic forward, will join Ronald Koeman’s staff at Barcelona. The 48-year-old spent two seasons at the Nou Camp between 2004 and 2006, scoring 22 goals in 62 games and winning the Champions League. Larsson held talks with Southend United in September last year about becoming their manager but the move collapsed. Former Hoffenheim manager Alfred Schreuder has also joined as a coach. I'll be surprised if there's any truth to this.
While I've nothing personal against Keane, his time here has demonstrated a huge lack of consistency, often showing a mental fragility when under pressure. When he's good, he's very good, but those periods don't come often enough for my liking. Overall, I'd lose all confidence in our ability to identify problems, if we were to extend.
