Joao Virginia is returning to Everton after the goalkeeper’s loan with Reading was ended early.
The 20-year-old Portuguese, who joined the Club from Arsenal in summer 2018, made three appearances for Championship team Reading.
Virginia was a member of Everton Under-23s’ double-winning side last season and will report back to USM Finch Farm to link up with his Blues teammates this week.

Everton goalkeeper Joao Virginia has signed a new long-term contract with the club as he prepares to make his second senior appearance. Virginia had entered the final year of the contract he signed in the summer of 2018 but has now put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at Goodison until June 2024.

It’s now been five months since Everton goalkeeper João Virgínia signed for Sporting on a loan move. He has until the end of the season to prove himself at the Lisbon side and perhaps be signed via a €3.5m buying option the Lions have over him.
That’s why every time he’s about to get a chance to play for the Portuguese club, the local media comes up with a different story about the big opportunity he’s getting.
It’s no different today, as Virgínia is set to start in the Allianz Cup semifinal against Santa Clara tomorrow, and Record features a new piece saying he’ll try to gather ‘new arguments to try to convince’ Sporting to keep him.
Now the most curious claim in this article is that, according to the outlet, the Lions haven’t even considered triggering the buying option so far. Record writes that the subject ‘has not been discussed’, as the Lions are more likely to analyse his spell at the end of the season.
Virgínia has seven appearances for Sporting so far, with seven goals conceded and three clean sheets. All of them were played in cup competitions, and his debut in the Portuguese League is yet to come.
The goalkeeper’s contract with Everton runs until 2024.

Sporting Club de Portugal will try to arrange another loan deal with Everton for goalkeeper Joao Virginia this summer. That’s according to A Bola and O Jogo, who both say the Portuguese side have no intention of taking up the permanent option in his loan deal. Virginia has been on loan with the Portuguese side since the summer when Everton shipped him out so he could get regular game time. He’s not really found that with Sporting, making only seven appearances in all competitions so far, with none of those coming in the Liga Portugal. That would suggest they’ve not been happy with him, but that is not the case, with A Bola and O Jogo reporting they are keen to keep him next season. The first reports that Sporting ‘are going to try with Everton’ for a new loan this summer, despite having an option to purchase him permanently at the end of the season. A Bola back this up, stating that Sporting ‘is trying a new loan’ with Everton, although they are also ‘trying the definitive transfer’ as well. They ‘believe in the goalkeeper’s quality’ but not for the €5m purchase option currently included in his loan deal, which is considered ‘too high an amount’ by those in charge at the club. Thus ‘negotiations continue’ to work out some sort of agreement, although that might take longer than they think. sportwitness.co.uk/

Why loan him out and sign Andy Lonergan?
