Willie Kirk says his Everton side should have been "more streetwise" after they gave up an early lead to fall to a 3-1 WSL defeat at Manchester United on Sunday.
The Blues led as early as the second minute through a Mary Earps own goal.
However, Lauren James struck the first of a brace just two minutes later, with Katie Zelem converting a penalty in between.
Asked if he felt the eventual scoreline was a fair reflection on the game, Kirk said: "I don't think so. We performed well but United took their chances better than we did.
"The times that they scored the goals were really important and we lost the game in those crucial times.
"We should have been more capable and more streetwise to keep the lead for longer than we did.
"We spoke before the game about taking the lead and seeing how we would react to that.
"Unfortunately, they reacted well to the goal and we were naïve after we scored.
"We should have held on to the lead longer but we didn't.
"Towards the end of the second half we got into the game more but it was too late at that point."
All of Manchester United's goals came before the break, with James completing the scoring on the stroke of half-time.
The result leaves Everton fifth in WSL with a home game against leaders Arsenal up next on Sunday 15 December.
"The third goal just before half-time was a killer for us and suddenly the game changes direction," added Kirk.
"But I do not think there was much between the two teams at all.
"We have to pick ourselves up from this now for a big reaction against Arsenal next week."
