In a surprise move, Landon Donovan is nearing a return to the Galaxy, multiple outlets reported Thursday.
A source confirmed the sides are involved in talks and the announcement could come soon.
Donovan returned to MLS in 2005, joining the Galaxy after a stint with Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga. He retired following the 2014 season after helping the Galaxy to a fourth MLS Cup.
Donovan, 34, is the all-time MLS leader in goals scored and assists. He scored 10 goals with 19 assists in his final season.
Sports Illustrated’s Blake Thomsen broke the news this morning.
According to MLS rules, Sept. 15 is the date teams must submit their final 28-man roster that can’t be changed the rest of the season.
The Galaxy are tied for second place in the Western Conference (44 points), seven behind first-place FC Dallas.
It is unclear when Donovan will join the club on the field. There are just six games remaining, including Sunday’s at home against Orlando City SC.
Since his retirement, Donovan has worked as an analyst for Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Fox Sports and he recently became a part-owner in Swansea City of the English Premier League.
