Leeds United boss Paul Heckingbottom said Matthew Pennington "deserves applauding" after completing the full 90 minutes for the Whites against Aston Villa on Friday night - just 10 days after suffering a calf injury.
Leeds were edged out 1-0 at Villa Park - Lewis Grabban's 29th-minute goal proving the game's decisive moment - but the Leeds manager said the defender "stood up to the challenge well". The defeat means Leeds remain 14th in the table.
Antonee Robinson played the full game for Bolton Wanderers as they played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at Barnsley.
The Tykes opened the scoring on 22 minutes through Gary Gardner, before Adam Le Fondre and Craig Noone struck late in the second half to put Bolton ahead. Barnsley had the last word, however, when Oli McBurnie hit a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser.
Bolton rise to 20th in the table, two points ahead of Barnsley who remain in the relegation zone.
Midfielder Muhamed Besic started as Middlesbrough secured a vital 2-1 win over fellow play-off hopefuls Bristol City.
The Robins had gone ahead through Milan Djuric’s 13th minute strike but George Friend’s header brought Boro level just five minutes later. Daniel Ayala scored the winner for Tony Pulis’s side midway through the second half. The win propels Boro up to fifth in the table.
Callum Connolly, meanwhile, was a second-half substitute as Ipswich Town were beaten 2-1 at Nottingham Forest, for whom Kieran Dowell was an unused substitute.
Grant Ward had put Ipswich in front but late goals from Ben Brereton and Joe Lolley secured a dramatic victory for Forest. Ipswich remain 12th in the table.
In League Two, goalkeeper Louis Gray was an unused substitute as Carlisle United drew 1-1 at Morecambe.
Jamie Devitt gave 10th-placed Carlisle the lead on 14 minutes before Callum Lang equalised for the home side a quarter of an hour later.
Away from these shores, second-half substitute Ademola Lookman was on target for RB Leipzig as the Bundesliga side drew 1-1 at Werder Bremen.
Lookman hit Leipzig’s equaliser on 50 minutes after Bremen had taken a 28th-minute lead through Niklas Moisander.
In La Liga, Sandro Ramirez started as Sevilla hit back to draw 2-2 at home to Villarreal.
Raba and Carlos Bacca had put Villarreal in front before Nolito and Steven Nzonzi rescued a point for Vincenzo Montella’s men. Sevilla remain seventh in the table.
