Goodison Park played host to a special event to mark the start of Living Wage Week 2017. As an accredited Living Wage employer, Everton Football Club, Everton in the Community and Everton Free School hosted the Merseyside leg of a series of national events to recognise the work being done to tackle in-work poverty, low pay and to celebrate the successes of businesses which are accredited Living Wage employers. Organised by the Living Wage Foundation, the Alex Young Suite at Goodison Park hosted a number of local businesses, politicians, trade unions and community groups. Guests received a welcome from Everton’s Deputy CEO, Professor Denise Barrett-Baxendale, who spoke about why Everton were committed to paying the Living Wage, the business reasons for becoming an accredited Living Wage employer and how businesses have to play their part in making the Living Wage part of their strategic business thinking. Professor Barrett-Baxendale also presented city-region Mayor, Steve Rotherham, with a plaque to commemorate the accreditation of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority as a Living Wage Employer. Mayor Rotherham spoke passionately about the need to abolish in-work poverty and commended the ‘trail-blazing’ example set by Everton in becoming accredited Living Wage employers. Local businesses in the room also heard from employees of Cooper Noble Care, a local care home firm, on how taking home Living Wage has positively affected them. The event also celebrated the announcement of a 3.6 per cent increase in the Living Wage to £8.75 per hour around the UK and 4.6 per cent to £10.20 in London, giving a wages boost to more than 150,000 workers at 3,600 companies which have adopted the measure, including Everton Football Club, Google and Ikea. Living Wage Week runs from Sunday 5 November to Saturday 12 November.
