After Brendan Galloway quickly fell out of favour during his loan spell at West Bromwich Albion last season, Everton would have been hoping that a temporary stay at Sunderland would go a lot better. However, there is a real sense of déjà vu after the young defender, who started the season as a first-choice at the Stadium of Light, finds himself out of the picture after a number of shaky displays. After struggling badly in the recent 2-0 home defeat to Leeds United, the 21-year-old was targeted and isolated as Thomas Christiansen’s side cruised to victory, Galloway’s standing among Sunderland supporters has nosedived. He was already under scrutiny after a poor debut against Derby County, where he was arguably at fault for Bradley Johnson’s opener in the 1-1 draw. And the fact that Galloway was omitted from Sunderland’s last two games, the home defeat to Nottingham Forest in midweek and Saturday’s draw at Hull, does not bode well for his hopes of enjoying a better time under Simon Grayson than he did under Tony Pulis. Out of his depth? Galloway was not even part of Sunderland’s 18-man squad in the last two games and, in his absence, former Everton man Bryan Oviedo (below) has performed passably on the left of Grayson’s back four. Therefore, this should raise plenty of alarm bells for Everton. The Toffees looked to have pulled off an excellent deal when they signed the then-teenager from MK Dons in 2014 and his initial outings under Roberto Martinez were certainly promising. However, if the England under-21 international cannot get into the respective starting XIs of West Brom and Sunderland, what chance does he have of forcing his way back into Everton’s long-term plans? www.hitc.com

Hopefully he can overcome this difficult period and come out of it stronger. He was a decent player for us.
