A photographer who captured a seahorse clutching a cotton wool bud in Indonesia’s polluted sea water has been nominated for Wildlife Photographer of the Year. American photographer Justin Hofman captured the image near the surface of a reef near the Sumbawa Island, which was filled with sewage sludge as the tide started to come in. The water splashed into the photographer’s snorkel while he was taking the photo, causing him to become ill the next day. Indonesia has the world’s highest levels of marine biodiversity but is second only to China as a contributor to marine plastic debris. Hofman is one of 14 finalists nominated for the Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year. The others include a 14-year-old girl who waited two days to take a photograph of a Lynx in the wild, and an image of fox taken on Wrangle Island in Russia, one of the world’s most difficult to reach National Reserves.
