João Virgínia - Goalkeeper


Portuguese goalkeeper João Virgínia signed for Everton from Arsenal in August 2018.

Born in Faro, the 18-year-old stopper came through Benfica’s academy, before joining the Gunners from the Lisbon giants in 2015.

Virgínia made 22 appearances for Arsenal at age group level during the 2017/18 season, featuring for both their Under-18 and Under-23 teams.

The towering goalkeeper was part of the Portugal side that beat Italy in the Under-19 European Championship final in Finland in July 2018.

He has represented his country up to Under-20 level.

In 2018-19 the under 23 team went on to win both the Premier League 2 league title and the Premier League Cup.

On 11th July 2019, Everton announced Joao would join Reading for the 2019-20 season, but the loan was cut short and he returned to Everton on 7th January 2020.

On 22nd September 2020, João signed a new contract keeping him at the club until June 2024.

On 24th August 2021, Everton announced that João had joined Sporting Lisbon on loan for the rest of the season, with an option top buy.

On 8th July 2022, João joined Dutch Eredivisie club SC Cambuur for the 2022-2023 season.

On 9th July 2023, Everton announced that João had signed a new 2 year deal, until June 2025.
