The Football League

The first Football League matches took place in 1988 with the following founder members: Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. It is the oldest professional football league of it's type in the world.

Before this league began, other than a few games in the 1987-88 FA Cup, Everton played friendly games, and local cup competitions, such as the Liverpool Senior Cup and the Lancashire Senior Cup.

Everton went on to win their very first Football League title in the 1890-91 season.

The FA Cup

The FA Cup first began in 1871 and is the oldest national football competition in the world.

Everton's first entry in to the competition in the 1887-88 season ended in controversy. They'd originally lost 1-0 to Bolton, but that game was replayed due to Bolton fielding an ineligible player. The next 2 replays ended in draws, before Everton finally won.

However, despite getting thrashed 6-0 in the next round by Preston North End, their victory over Bolton was retrospectively disqualified, for fielding ineligible players themselves and awarded to Bolton. The Preston game became a void match and records discarded. Everton didn't enter a team the following season.

The Charity Shield

The FA Charity Shield, as it was formerly known, was first played for in 1908. It evolved from the “Sheriff of London Shield” fixture that had been played annually between a leading professional club and a leading amateur club.

In 1974 FA Secretary Ted Croker proposed that “The FA Charity Shield” (its name from 1908 until 2002) should be played at Wembley as a curtain-raiser to the new season. The match would feature the reigning League champions and FA Cup holders.

Prior to 1974, with the Shield a less prestigious fixture, the match was played at various club grounds and often involved teams who had won nothing at all.

While Wembley acted as host, from 1974 to 2000, well over £5m was distributed to charities by The FA, most of them nominated by the competing clubs.

In 2012, The Shield was moved away from Wembley for one year and played at Villa Park in Birmingham. This was due to the use of Wembley during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

World Wars

There was no league football between 1915 & 1919 because of World War 1.

There was no league football between 1939 & 1946 because of World War 2

Unfortunately for Everton, the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 interrupted the football programme while Everton were champions.

Eleven Everton players lost their lives after fighting for their country during the First World War.

The outbreak of the Second World War once again saw the suspension of league football at a time when Everton were champions.

When official competition resumed in 1946, the Everton team had been split up and paled in comparison to the pre-war team.

European Competitions

The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (ICFC) was a European football competition played between 1955 and 1971.

The first edition of the European Cup took place during the 1955–56 season. The competition was renamed to UEFA Champions League for the 1992–93 season.

The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (CWC) was first held in the 1960–61 season. The decision was taken to abolish the competition after the end of the 1998–99 tournament and merge it into the UEFA Cup (UEFA) eventually to be known as the UEFA Europa League (EL).

The League Cup

The English Football League Cup, historically referred to as the League Cup, is open to all 92 members of the Premier League and English Football League.

First held in the 1960-61 season, it is a seeded competition, with higher ranking teams entering the competition in later stages.

The winner of the competition earns entry in to the Europa League competition the following season.

With the renaming of the Football League as the English Football League in 2016, the tournament was rebranded as the EFL Cup for the 2016–17 season.

The Premier League

The Premier League, or English Premier League (Prem) as it's often referred to, is the top level of the English football league system. Originally contested by 22 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the English Football League.

The competition was formed as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992, following the decision of clubs in the First Division to break away from the Football League, and take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal.

This resulted in a restructuring of the English Football League system, seeing what 'was' Division 1, now called the English Premier League, and what 'was' Division 2, now called The English Football League Championship. Division 1 is now the 3rd tier, and Division 2 became the 4th tier of English football, and so on.

The 22 inaugural members of the new Premier League were Arsenal, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea, Coventry City, Crystal Palace, Everton, Ipswich Town, Leeds United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, Oldham Athletic, Queens Park Rangers, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Wimbledon.

The number of clubs was reduced from 22 to 20 in 1995 when four teams were relegated from the league and only two teams promoted.

The league changed its name from the FA Premier League to the Premier League in 2007.

In 2011, a Welsh club participated in the Premier League for the first time after Swansea City gained promotion.
