André Gomes - Midfielder

André Gomes joined Everton from Barcelona on transfer-deadline day in August 2018.

The Portugal international was an influential member of his country’s European Championship-winning squad in 2016.

Midfielder Gomes won league titles with Benfica and Barcelona and was instrumental to the Portuguese club’s run to the Europa League final in 2013.

He played regular Champions League football for Benfica, Valencia and Barca before his move to Goodison Park after being handed a full debut in the competition for his first club at Barcelona’s Nou Camp in December 2012.

Gomes signed for Benfica as an 18-year-old in 2011 and quickly muscled his way into the first-team frame. He scored on his first league start in a 3-0 victory at Gil Vicente and played 18 games in all competitions as his side were pipped to the title by Porto and reached the Europa League final, where they were beaten by Chelsea.

He helped Benfica end their four-year wait for a domestic title in 2013-14 and starred in European competition in the same season, with his side toppling the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus on the way to a second Europa League final on the bounce. Gomes played all 120 minutes of the showpiece against Sevilla in Turin with the Spanish team prevailing on penalties.

Gomes joined La Liga side Valencia on loan for the 2014-15 campaign and promptly and efficiently stamped his ball-playing style on his new club. Valencia were unbeaten in Gomes’ first 10 league appearances and he ended the season with four goals from 33 appearances as his side secured a top-four spot and Champions League qualification.

The 25-year-old signed permanently at the Mestalla Stadium the following summer and cemented his favourites’ status during a personally stellar 2015-16.

Gomes played 41 times and scored four goals for his club before joining up with his country for their triumphant European Championship campaign.

He featured five times in the tournament in France and days after the final completed a £29million transfer to Barcelona.

Gomes ended his first season with the Catalans on a high note when he set up Neymar to score in Barca’s Spanish Cup final victory over Alaves.

Capped 29 times by his country at the time of his Goodison arrival, Gomes played 30 La Liga matches in 2016-17 and struck against former employers Valencia in a 4-2 win to get off the mark for his new club.

He added 21 league and cup appearances as Barcelona completed a domestic clean sweep in 2017-18 and played nine times as Ernesto Valverde’s men progressed to the Champions League last eight.

Gomes was selected in the team of the tournament at the European Under-19 Championship in 2012. He made his full international debut two years later shortly after completing his loan switch to Valencia.

On Tuesday 25th June 2019, Everton announced that André Gomes had signed a new 5 year deal with the club, believed to be in the region of £22 million.

On 1st September 2022, Gomes made a deadline day loan switch to French club Lille OSC for the remainder of the 2022-23 season.
