Everton Under-23s begin their defence of the Lancashire Senior Cup with a home tie against Rochdale at Finch Farm on Wednesday afternoon. Everton won the competition for the 2015/16 season, beating Oldham Athletic on penalties in the final in August. The trophy was one of three which the young Blues lifted during pre-season, with the Liverpool Senior Cup and Super Cup NI titles also collected during a successful summer schedule. This term, Everton enter the competition in the round of 16. The winners of Wednesday’s tie will face Barrow away (on a date to be confirmed) in the quarter-final. Also involved in the Lancashire Senior Cup this year are Liverpool, Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, Fleetwood Town and Morecambe. Under-23s coach David Unsworth says he may take the opportunity on Wednesday to rotate his squad. “We had a great pre-season winning three trophies,” he explained. “We carried over and won the two Senior Cups [from 2015/16] in pre-season, so it will be nice to start out in these competitions again. “It will be nice to give a few of the boys who haven’t been playing a game as well on Wednesday. We’ll certainly do that.”

Everton u-23s 0-3 Rochdale: Young Blues crash out of Lancashire Senior CupDavid Unsworth's much-changed side bowed out of Cup at Finch Farm A much changed and inexperienced Everton side lost 3-0 to Rochdale today. At a wind-swept USM Finch Farm, the young Blues bowed out of the Lancashire Senior Cup after conceding three goals in the second-half. Everton were the defending champions having seen off Oldham Athletic in the summer's final but have been knocked out of the competition. David Unsworth's side enjoyed the better of the opening period but Anthony Evans missed the target from Courtney Duffus' pull back while Beni Baningime hit the outside of the post. Morgan Feeney and Jack Bainbridge were forced into a series of goal-line blocks to keep the scores level but the Blues finished the half on top. But with the wind at their backs, Rochdale capitalised after the break and struck three times. Conor McAleny had an effort saved while Duffus failed to connect with Michael Donahue's excellent cross.
