Kevin Sheedy reflected on a job well done as Everton Under-18s avoided a “potential banana skin” to beat Tranmere 2-0 and advance into the FA Youth Cup fourth round.
The young Blues were made to work hard for the victory against a spirited Rovers side who had chances of their own in an entertaining cup tie at Goodison.
A penalty in first-half injury time from Fraser Hornby and a tap-in from Morgan Feeney in the 48th minute eventually proved enough for the Toffees.
“I thought we deserved to win but full credit to Andy Parkinson and his Tranmere team because they ran us all the way,” Sheedy told evertontv. “We knew when the draw was made that it could be a potential banana skin - it was their cup final.
“I watched them in the previous round against Scunthorpe when they played well. We knew they would come here and give it 100 percent - which they did - but we got the goals at the right time.
“We scored a penalty just before half-time and then at the start of the second half got another. It took the pressure off a little bit, but fair play to Tranmere because they kept going and hit the post and bar. We did the same late on and there were chances at both ends. I just felt that we were the better team overall and I’m just pleased to get through.”
The win maintained the Under-18s’ excellent form. Kevin Sheedy’s side are unbeaten since August and sit fifth in the league table.
“Our run has been great,” added Sheedy. “That’s 12 unbeaten - we’ve won eight and drawn four, so we are a form team.
“In my experience, when you have your third-round game at Goodison, the players do get nervous no matter what you say to them.
“Once we got the second goal I expected us to go on and win comfortably. We had some excellent opportunities to make it three and four, but we didn’t take them. Tranmere battled to the end and made it tough for us.”
