Young children attending an Everton in the Community Premier League 4 Sport boxing session at Salisbury Boxing Club received a special delivery recently when Club Ambassador Ian Snodin turned up at one of their classes armed with EitC branded boxing kit. The Club’s official charity has been working with ‘The Solly’ for more than two years and the Everton-based boxing club delivers training sessions on behalf of EitC twice a week as part of the Premier League 4 Sport programme, engaging 120 young people aged 11+ weekly. The boxing club relies on volunteer support to run the sessions and when EitC staff noticed that some of the equipment being used needed updating they purchased 20 boxing kits co-branded with EitC and ‘The Solly’ for junior boxers to wear at competitions which Blues legend Ian Snodin distributed at a recent Friday night class before jumping in the ring and trying his own hand at a spot of sparring with the youngsters. The charity also donated some head guards and gloves for the juniors to use both in training and competitions which will enable the young people to train safely and with the correct equipment. After observing training trying his hand at the sport with the youngsters, Everton Ambassador Snodin, said: “I’ve met a great group of kids down here this afternoon who are all really passionate about their boxing. “It’s great that Everton in the Community and the Premier League can deliver a programme like this to keep the local youngsters fit and active and this equipment that I’ve helped to deliver to will help them train safely. Who knows, we might have a future Tony Bellew amongst us!” Mick King, Everton in the Community Schools Education Manager, added: “Our Premier League 4 Sport programme really values our partnership with one of the best amateur boxing clubs in Liverpool and we’d like to thank them for all of their continued support with the project.” The Club’s official charity has been delivering the Premier League funded programme since 2009 and offers young people aged 14 and above, of all abilities, a chance to get involved in sport in their local community. The project provides opportunities for people to develop their skills and EitC delivers eight sports on a weekly basis in 20 satellite clubs across the city, bridging school and community sport, to provide competitive opportunities and a pathway for progression. The PL4S programme has helped to provide legacy beyond the 2012 London Olympic Games and has increased the diversity of sports available for sport children to participate in. In addition to boxing, the other seven sports on offer include judo, badminton, basketball and netball and PL4S has strong links with the governing bodies of these sports which has led to opportunities for local coaches to develop their skills and for young sports leaders in schools who are involved in the programme to receive sport specific leadership training.
