Manchester United winger Memphis Depay is Lyon coach Bruno Genesio's "number one priority" during the January transfer window.
United manager Jose Mourinho said on Friday the Premier League club had turned down an offer for the 22-year-old Netherlands international.
"I have put a priority on Memphis Depay," said Genesio.
"Things are progressing. We keep on working. It takes time because recruiting a player now is not easy."
Depay joined United from PSV Eindhoven for £31m in May 2015, signing a four-year contract.
He has scored seven goals in 53 appearances for the Red Devils but has not started Premier League game since Mourinho was appointed in the summer.
Speaking on Friday, Mourinho said: "The offer we had is far from being reasonable for us.
"He is our player. If nothing happens, he is one more for us."
Genesio described Depay as a "young player with great international experience and a lot of potential".
He added: "He has an interesting profile for us. But there are several things to consider, including the price."

Manchester United agree Memphis Depay sale to Lyon for £14.7m• Holland international’s fee could rise to £21.7m with add-ons • Initial fee is half of what United paid PSV for Depay in 2015 Manchester United have agreed to sell Memphis Depay to Lyon for around €17m (£14.75m), with the fee potentially rising to €25m if a series of add-ons are triggered. United have structured the deal with the Ligue 1 club to include buy-back and sell-on clauses. Lyon qualifying for the Champions League and Depay being offered a fresh contract by the French club are among the add-ons that will raise the price for United. Even if all of these are reached United accept there will still be a small loss on a player who cost €34m from PSV Eindhoven in May 2015. However, Depay was guaranteed to earn a minimum of around £75,000 a week until June 2019 so the club are content this sizeable salary is to be removed. Depay was bought in May 2015 by Louis van Gaal, United’s previous manager, who had given him his Holland debut. Depay had been the Eredivisie’s top scorer in 2014-15, the forward’s goals a key factor in PSV’s title win. On signing Depay said: “It’s been an exciting and hectic period and to have had to choose between so many top clubs doesn’t make it any easier. “Manchester United is an absolute dream club so I didn’t need any convincing about the quality of the guys already there.” A number of clubs, including Liverpool, were interested in acquiring Depay at that point but United have found it a challenge to sell for an acceptable fee a player who has disappointed. In his season and a half at Old Trafford Depay has never established himself, making 16 Premier League starts and scoring twice.
