Following nearly two years of speculation, Nintendo has unveiled its latest game console, Switch, as the company looks to catch up with rivals Sony and Microsoft. Part home console and part tablet-like handheld, Switch which was earlier codenamed NX is designed for seamless gaming in and outdoors.
At the centre of the Switch platform is a tablet-like display (called Switch Console) that can slot into the Switch Dock which in turn connects to a TV when at home. Alternatively, two controller attachments on either side can turn the Switch Console into a handheld device.
The Switch is powered by a custom version of the Tegra graphics processing chip from Nvidia.The graphics hardware creator says it is based on the same technology that powers PC gaming graphics cards.
The Switch appears to be capable of playing games completely both indoors and outdoors, with a trailer showing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon, as well as Mario Kart and Super Mario titles.
Switch will offer two controller options. The Joy-Con features two detachable mini-controllers that, when slotted into a Joy-Con Grip, com bine to form one modular controller.
The Switch Pro Controller, on the other hand, is a more traditional gamepad that appears to be designed for home use.
Switch is Nintendo's first console since Wii U in 2012, which failed to replicate the success of the Wii, prompting shareholders and observers to urge Nintendo to embrace smartphone gaming.
Nintendo Switch is scheduled for release in March 2017, but the list of launch countries hasn't been announced. As with previous Nintendo products, it's unlikely the Switch will see a release in India.
Nintendo is also yet to announce the price for Switch.

I have to be honest being an ex gamer who still plays a few games, that it comes across as a convenient way to play very basic games.
