Idrissa Gana Gueye’s World Cup adventures came to an end in dramatic fashion on Thursday afternoon after Senegal lost 1-0 to Colombia and missed out on qualification to the last 16. As with most of the final round of group games in Russia, the permutations were seemingly endless when it came to who would qualify out of Group H, but most importantly, Senegal knew that at least a point would see them reach the knockout stages. A second-half header from Yerry Mina gave Colombia victory, though. And despite finishing level on four points with Japan - who went down 1-0 to Poland - and with the same goal difference, Senegal failed to progress having accrued two more yellow cards in the tournament. Everton’s Gana kept his place in the Senegal side as Aliou Cisse paired him in a central midfield two with Cheikhou Kouyate of West Ham. A goalless first half may not have given either set of fans much to cheer about – particularly when VAR reversed a penalty decision for the Lions of Teranga after Davinson Sanchez’s challenge on Sadio Mane - but those inside the Samara Arena were united when the news that Poland had taken the lead against Japan filtered through. That meant both Senegal and Colombia would progress at the expense of the Japanese, who began the day leading the group. However, on 74 minutes, defender Yerry Mina powerfully headed home the winner. It meant Senegal were heading out and Cisse’s side went in search of the goal that would reclaim their place in the top two. Colombia keeper David Ospina was at his best to deny M’Baye Niang before Ismaila Sarr twice went agonisingly close in quick succession. But try as they might, Senegal just couldn’t find a way through a resolute wall of yellow shirts, with Colombia – who began the day in third place in Group H – celebrating topping the group and the Lions of Teranga wondering what might have been.

Brazil face USA in New Jersey on Saturday, September 8, before taking on El Salvador in Washington four days later on Wednesday, September 12. Should Richarlison feature for his country, he would become the first Everton player to represent the five-time world champions. Everton FC

Five Everton players have been named in the England Under-21 squad for European Championship qualifying matches against Andorra and Scotland later this month. Striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, scorer of the goal which won England's Under-20 team the World Cup last year, is set to continue leading the Under-21s' bid to book their place in next year's European finals in Italy and San Marino. He is joined by fellow world champions Jonjoe Kenny, Ademola Lookman and Kieran Dowell in Aidy Boothroyd's party for the meeting with Andorra at Chesterfield's Proact Stadium on Thursday, October 11. Everton midfielder Tom Davies is also included in the party, which will travel north after facing Andorra to take on Scotland at Hearts' Tynecastle Park on Tuesday, October 16. England need to collect one point from the two fixtures to secure top spot in Group 4 and secure their spot among the 12 qualifiers for the finals tournament next June, when manager Boothroyd's side would aim to better their semi-final performance in Poland last year.

Calvert-Lewin On Target For England U21sGylfi Sigurdsson, Ademola Lookman and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were all in the thick of the action for their countries as the international break kicked off in style for Everton. The pick of Thursday’s bunch was the newly-recalled France duo of Lucas Digne and Kurt Zouma square off against Gylfi Sigurdsson’s Iceland in a friendly serving as a warm-up for Les Bleus’ Nations League tie with Germany next week. France, of course, lifted the World Cup last summer after they beat Croatia in the final out in Russia but they were brought down to earth with a bump as Iceland raced to a 2-0 lead at the Stade de Guingamp. First Bikir Bjarnason fired home the opener before Sigurdsson’s corner was turned in by Kari Arnason. But France, with Digne playing the full 90 minutes and Zouma coming on at half time, responded with two goals of their own as Hólmar Örn Eyjólfsson put through his own net and Kylian Mbappe struck with only added time remaining. Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted twice as England Under-21 thumped Andorra 7-0 at Chesterfield’s Proact Stadium. After Ademola Lookman opened the scoring on eight minutes, young Blues striker Calvert-Lewin scored either side of half time to put the game beyond the Andorrans. Jonjoe Kenny and Tom Davies also started and provided assists in the young Lions’ Under-21 European Championship qualifying win which guaranteed England's place at the tournament in Italy and San Marino. Two other Everton youngsters were in Under-21 Euros qualifying action, with Shayne Lavery starting Northern Ireland’s clash with Iceland, which ended in a 1-0 success, however Harry Charsley’s Republic of Ireland lost 3-1 in Israel. Over in Turkey, Cenk Tosun played 45 minutes of his countries’ 0-0 friendly draw with Bosnia & Herzegovina, for whom Mo Besic was an unused substitute.

Idrissa Gueye got on the scoresheet as Senegal eased past Sudan 3-0 in their Africa Cup Of Nations qualifier in Dakar.Everton midfielder Gana netted Senegal’s second goal of the night, with his side’s convincing victory putting them top of qualification Group A. Olympiakos defender Pape Abou Cisse poked home from close range finish to put the Senegalese ahead on 17 minutes. Buoyed by the opener, the home team doubled their led just a minute later – the onrushing Gana arriving late in the box to slot home after a fine team move. The goal was the 29-year-old’s second for his country on what was his 61st international appearance. The Toffees midfielder was then substituted in the 44th minute, with Sidy Sarr coming on to replace him. Senegal continued to press after the break and Rennes forward M’Baye Niang‘s deflected strike made the points safe five minutes after half-time. Aliou Cisse's men now lead Madagascar on goal difference in Group A, with a return meeting with Sudan in Khartoum next up on Tuesday.
