Everton boss Ronald Koeman reassures James McCarthy over futureMcCarthy heavily linked with move away from Goodison this summerRonald Koeman has once again moved to reassure James McCarthy he still has a place in his plans. A week after insisting the 25-year-old’s Everton future was not in doubt, the Republic of Ireland international continues to be linked with a move away from Goodison. Koeman started McCarthy at right-wing back at West Brom last weekend but substituted him late in the first-half as the Blues boss changed formation. The Everton manager insists it was a tactical decision and not an indication that McCarthy’s days are numbered. “He played in that system of three centre-backs and the right full back because that position he can play,” Koeman said. “In my opinion he’s not really a right full-back in a four-line defence. “The reason that I changed the player is that I changed the system (against West Brom) and I preferred Holgate at the right full-back position. “That’s the reason why I changed him (McCarthy) but he started last Tuesday in midfield because in my opinion he is one of our midfield players. “He wasn’t changed because I wasn’t happy with his performance. No, no, no. I changed the system. “Holgate, in my opinion, is a better right full-back defensively than James. But it is not a case of being unimpressed with James in pre-season.” McCarthy has been linked with moves to Sunderland and Celtic in recent weeks. Liv Echo

Assurances don't mean much if the price is right. He wasn't even on the bench today.

The transfer window closes in ten day’s time and Celtic fans are hoping their club could be about to pull a rabbit out of the hat – by signing Everton midfielder James McCarthy. There appears to be uncertainty surrounding McCarthy’s future at Goodison Park following the arrival of new manager Ronald Koeman – who substituted McCarthy during the first-half of Saturday’s 2-1 win over West Brom, claiming the decision was down to “tactics”. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has gone on-record as saying he wants two more players added to his squad before the transfer window slams shut on August 31 – so could McCarthy be one of them? Would Scottish fans want him after choosing Ireland over Scotland? Well they seem to love Brenda ......thank god I'm English

Would Scottish fans want him after choosing Ireland over Scotland? Well they seem to love Brenda ......thank god I'm English Brendan Rodgers is Irish of birth, and played for Ireland. James McCarthy is Scottish of birth, and chose to play for Ireland, and the same goes for Aiden McGeady.

I think he would be off if Besic was fit.
