According to reports from The Daily Mail, Stoke City have enquired into the availability of Everton midfielder James McCarthy.
The Republic of Ireland international followed manager Roberto Martinez to Goodison Park from Wigan in summer 2013, after lifting a shock FA Cup title with the Latics.
The industrious midfielder has since established himself as a regular of the Toffees’ starting Xi but struggled for form at times last season and may not be such an important figure in the plans of Martinez’s managerial successor, Ronald Koeman.
Indeed, the Dutchman is known to be on the the lookout for a powerful midfielder, with the likes of Zenit St. Petersburg’s Axel Witsel, Portugal international William Carvalho and countryman Kevin Strootman on the Goodison gaffer’s radar.
Accordingly, The Daily Mail claim Stoke City have ‘checked’ on whether the Toffees would be prepared to part with the 25-year-old this summer, although it appears they’re yet to receive a formal response.

Everton have turned down enquiries from a number of Premier League rivals for James McCarthy, HITC Sport understands.
Sunderland - who are already locked in talks with Everton over Lamine Kone - asked about McCarthy, whilst in recent weeks it is understood Swansea City and Toffees boss Ronald Koeman's former club Southampton have also enquired.

I'm not worried about him leaving but we already have to bring players in, and his leaving would be an additional burden. Barry is getting on and Besic is injured, so we only have McCarthy and Gueye as defensive midfielders.

The transfer window closes in ten day’s time and Celtic fans are hoping their club could be about to pull a rabbit out of the hat – by signing Everton midfielder James McCarthy. There appears to be uncertainty surrounding McCarthy’s future at Goodison Park following the arrival of new manager Ronald Koeman – who substituted McCarthy during the first-half of Saturday’s 2-1 win over West Brom, claiming the decision was down to “tactics”. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has gone on-record as saying he wants two more players added to his squad before the transfer window slams shut on August 31 – so could McCarthy be one of them?

Would Scottish fans want him after choosing Ireland over Scotland?
