Police and council issue details of diversions

Diversions are in place and the M62 is partially closed after a huge collision which saw two lorries overturned under the Rocket junction.

Two vehicles carrying gravel and scrap cars spilled their loads in the incident at around midday on the Old Swan-bound carriageway of Queens Drive, as traffic turned right from Bowring Park Road.

A Liverpool council spokesman said it didn’t know how long it would take to clear the road by the M62, warning it could affect the evening rush hour.

He said: “We genuinely don’t know how long it’s going to take to clear.

“Our engineers believe there is a possibility it could affect the evening rush hour.”

Merseyside Police say:

As traffic coming off the M62 and Bowring Park Road into Liverpool is unable to turn right onto Queens Drive, two lanes of the Liverpool-bound carriageway of the M62 are blocked.

Traffic is being diverted down Edge Lane Drive away from the direction of Queens Drive’s Old Swan-bound carriageway.

Edge Lane Drive is also blocked to traffic entering the M62 in the direction of Manchester.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The council says:
Edge Lane Drive / Broadgreen Road outbound: Traffic cannot proceed under The Rocket flyover and is instead being diverted northbound or southbound along Queens Drive.

M62 / Bowring Park Road northbound onto Queens Drive: Traffic cannot proceed under The Rocket flyover onto the northbound section of Queens Drive and is instead being diverted either to Edge Lane Drive or Queens Drive southbound.

Queens Drive northbound: The sliproad at the side of The Rocket flyover is closed to traffic proceeding northbound onto Queens Drive. Traffic is being diverted either onto Edge Lane Drive or outbound onto Bowring Park Road / M62.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport also advised people travelling from the city to the airport via the M62 to use alternative routes.

Arriva North West said Liverpool bus services 6 and 7 travelling into the city were diverted, with stops between Broadgreen Road and Oswald Street dropped.

The buses are being diverted from Broadgreen Hospital onto Queens Drive, down to Old Swan, left onto St Oswald Street, and then right back onto Edge Lane.
