I'm very confident of winning this, and our players have had a match to get over the disappointment and it's a bigger game than it might appear given the table. Lukaku has done well against these as has Barkley, so they will be up for it. Whether to play Aaron Lennon is a talking point for sure, and at least the fans will be happy seeing Joel in goal.

Roberto Martinez has been impressed with Newcastle’s January business - but has challenged his Everton players to see off the Magpies and kick off an attempt to pick up maximum home points between now and the end of the season. Steve McLaren added four new players to his squad last month, with striker Seydou Doumbia arriving on loan from Roma on deadline day. The Ivorian frontman joins Jonjo Shelvey, Henri Saivet and Andros Townsend as the new faces at St James’ Park. But while he believes Wednesday's opponents have bought wisely, Martinez is keen to see his side replicate at home the form that has seen them lose just twice away from Goodison Park this term. “They spent really well,” said Martinez. “Shelvey and Townsend have good Premier League pedigree and they’ve got a very good striker in Doumbia, who is going to make them more powerful. “They are a team who will always be competitive - they had a tough start to the season but now they look a strong outfit. Even when we beat them at St James’ Park, it was a very close game. The first half hour was as good as we have played away from home this campaign. "We’ve got three important league games in a short period of time and it’s true our points return at home hasn’t been good enough. “We have conceded too many goals at home compared to our away performances and we know our fans deserve better and deserve more from us. “That’s where we want to work and where we rely on our fans - we can correct that. We’re facing the opportunity of fighting for a lot of points - seven home games offers 21 points at Goodison. “The margins are very small. I wouldn’t say we have been playing badly at all - what we haven’t been able to do is be solid and defensively stronger in terms of leaking goals that have cost us a lot in scorelines. “That’s something we look forward to correcting and we must make sure that between now and the end of the season there is a huge, huge improvement in that side of things.”
