Vardy Battle Excites LukakuPlayer of the Month Romelu Lukaku is looking forward to squaring off against Jamie Vardy on Saturday. The two in-form hitmen lock horns when Leicester City visit Goodison Park, with Vardy looking to add to his 15 goals so far this season. The bulk of those, of course, helped him break Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s record of scoring in 10 successive league games, in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United. Lukaku – who picked up the award November’s award after bagging five goals in four games – has been in fine fettle himself, with 15 strikes to his name as well. Indeed, the Toffees frontman is currently on a six-game scoring streak, with some corners suggesting Vardy’s new record is under threat. Regardless, Lukaku has been impressed with the former non-league striker’s exploits. “I am happy for him and he deserves the recognition he’s getting,” he said. “It’s something special. Scoring 11 goals on the bounce is incredible. It’s not easy at all. You are playing against top defenders so to break that record means you have a lot of quality. “Credit to him, he’s done great and is having a really good season. As a striker you always want to score goals and on a personal level you always want to be in that number one spot in the scoring charts. “So he is enjoying that moment I’m sure but for me, is if I score and we win, that’s good enough for me!” Lukaku insists he has not been taken aback by the Foxes’ electric form in the league, having watched them closely. “I haven’t been surprised at all,” he added. “I don’t think you should ever be surprised when something strange happens in this league! What they have done shows that they have quality. Claudio Ranieri is a good coach, and they have good players who work really well together. “Their defensive organisation is very good as well. Ranieri is Italian so he’ll have worked on that side of things. “But its up to us to get the balance right between attacking and defending in each moment because we know if we leave them too much space then Vardy, Mahrez and Okazaki can make the difference. We need to be careful – but they do too. We have a lot of players up front who can capitalise on any space. “It will be a good game. They have been impressive and I like watching them play. It wont be an easy game.”

Roberto Martinez has been impressed by the way Claudio Ranieri has managed to maintain Leicester City’s momentum from last season - despite taking over in the summer. At the tail-end of the last campaign, the Foxes won seven of their last 10 Premier League games to preserbe their place in the top flight. And while former Chelsea manager Ranieri replaced Nigel Pearson during the off-season, their sterling form has continued into the current campaign. City sit atop the Premier League with 35 points from 16 games, having won 10 and lost just once. According to Martinez, Ranieri deserves credit for his early work at the King Power stadium. “He has very good experience and is someone who fitted in well to their dressing room,” said the Blues boss. “They are a group of players with a very strong spirit but he has brought that knowhow and a tactical awareness. “All in all, he has a powerful team with a significant spirit that allows you to be competitive throughout games. “Now they are in a position in the league where they deserve to be. It comes down to how well we can face them at the weekend and make sure we can be as close to them as we can.” Martinez, however, is relishing pitting his side against the surprise package of the league so far. “They are having a fantastic season,” he added. “It is one of those incredible stories. They finished the last campaign really strongly and somehow they have carried on that momentum with a new manager and with a fresh approach. “They are a team that have got no fear. They have scored a lot of goals and a team that can do that the way they are doing has a chance to be successful. “We will have to be ready for that but we are at home and we feel that, in front of our fans, we can take anyone at this present time.”
