Zhen Hua transporter brings five giant cranes down MerseyThe five ‘megamax’ cranes being installed at Liverpool2 will significantly increase the Port of Liverpool’s freight-handling capacity. Able to safely operate in windspeeds of up to 55mph, each one will have a single pick, 50-tonne lift capability and will be semi-automated and remotely controlled. The cranes, made by China’s ZPMC, will enable the port to simultaneously handle two post-Panamax vessels (up to 13,500 TEU) on the Liverpool2 berth. ZPMC, the largest heavy-duty equipment manufacturer in the world, has chosen to site its UK service centre in Liverpool, to coincide with the arrival of the cranes in 2015. Specialist engineers will provide round-the-clock operational support to ensure proactive and real-time service and maintenance, ensuring maximum productivity from the Liverpool2 terminal at all times. GIANT CRANES HEADING DOWN THE MERSEYFive giant port cranes – each one as tall at the Royal Liver Building – are set to sail down the River Mersey today. The massive cranes will arrive at the Port of Liverpool in Seaforth to complete the £300m Liverpool2 deep water port development. The cranes were assembled in China by engineering firm ZPMC and have spent the last few weeks travelling to the UK on a giant barge. When fully operational by the end of this year, Liverpool2 will be able to handle 95% of the world’s biggest cargo ships – putting the city back into the premier league of global container ports. Port owner Peel Ports has already begun the process of hiring the 500 people it will need to operate the new facility. Many more jobs are expected to be created in the coming months and years as Liverpool2 leads to a huge growth in the North West logistics sector with many of the goods that currently come in though the southern ports, re-routed to Liverpool.
