As if I didn't have enough problems, I let my dog out into the garden for a quick widdle, and he quickly turned which drew my attention to the fact that there was a baby mouse being tormented by our cat.
So, I catch the mouse, at the time thinking it was just a small mouse, and take it inside to escape the cat for a while, and notice it has a sore tail, where it looks like it's been caught by the tail, and pulled free, and lost the fur on it's tail. It also had a slash on it's back, but it looks to be still strong and hopefully will survive.
As I'm dealing with it, the missus spots another one, so I quickly rush out to grab that one too before the cat gets it.
That's when I realise they are 2 babies.
Don't know where the mother is, but hopefully she escaped. I can put them back in the garden, and it is 'possible' (very unlikely) that they will be reunited with the mother. The most likely scenario is they'll be eaten, within a day or two, or killed by the cat.
I 'do' have a female Gerbil, (used to be two) which I inherited after somebody else lost interest, although she could kill them in seconds if it didn't go well ..... and ..... they have fleas / mites.
I could buy flea powder, and raise them, although I think it's awful being a pet mouse, but they are together and still alive at least. It would be just my luck if it was a male and female.
I am a big animal lover, so it's left me with a dilemma.
Is there anywhere that might adopt them, like the mouse equivalent of a cat sanctuary?
Snug in the warmth of my hand.
