John Stones and Luke Garbutt were powerless to prevent England Under-21s from an early tournament exit on Wednesday evening. The Young Lions contested their final group game of the Under-21 European Championship Finals in Czech Republic - but crashed to a 3-1 defeat to Italy. The result, coupled with a 1-1 draw between Portugal and Sweden, meant neither Gareth Southgate’s squad nor the Azzurri would progress to the semi-final stage. Stones had missed the first two games of the competition through a concussion sustained in the build-up to England’s 1-0 defeat to the Portuguese. Garbutt, however, played the full 90 minutes of that loss and again three days later to help aid a late 1-0 victory over the Swedes. And both Everton men were in the back four from start to finish as a goal from Andrea Belotti followed by Marco Benassi’s brace spelt the end of the line for Southgate’s side, before Nathan Redmond’s consolation.
